This document shows how to do a fresh re-install of “Windows 98”:

A) Create a new “ARCHIVE” folder, in the Local Disk (“C:”) directory | Help |
(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
Right click, point to “New”, click “Folder”, and name it “ARCHIVE”)
B) Save your customized WINDOWS subfolders in the ARCHIVE folder: | Help |
(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
click “WINDOWS” File Folder icon;
Copy the following “WINDOWS” subfolders to the “ARCHIVE” folder by holding down the “Ctrl” key while doing a drag-and-drop of each to the “ARCHIVE” folder:)
C) Create a Windows 98 “Boot Disk” | Help |
(Click “Start”, point to “Programs”, point to “Accessories”, point to “System Tools”, and then click “Configure Windows”;
In the “Configure Windows” dialog box, click “Startup Disk”, click “Create Disk...” and follow the instructions)
D) Save your current Windows 98 Product Key code (from the Windows Registry) | Help |
(To run Windows “Registry Editor”:
click “Start”, click “Run...”, type “regedit” and press the “Enter” key;
Press the “Home” key;
Click on the “+” sign just to the left of “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE”, then underneath it click on the “+” sign just to the left of “Software”, then underneath it the “+” sign just to the left of “Microsoft”, then underneath it the “+” sign just to the left of “Windows”, then underneath it click on “CurrentVersion”;
Click anywhere in the right pane, scroll down to “Product Key”, and save the 25-character code next to it by writing it on a piece of paper.
You will need this when you re-install Windows)
(This will be installed after you reinstall WINDOWS. The “Internet Explorer 6 (SP1)” program is not included in Microsoft’s “Windows 98” CD)
A) Download “Internet Explorer 6 (SP1)” | Help |
(Go to the Microsoft website and download “Internet Explorer 6 Setup”: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en
Click the “Download” button
Save the Setup file which downloads, “ie6setup.exe”, to the folder “C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files”)
Open the “Windows Update Setup Files” folder
and run “ie6setup.exe”
[click the “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
click “WINDOWS” File Folder icon;
click the “Windows Update Setup Files” File Folder icon;
Click the “ie6setup.exe” Application icon]:
In summary: the files to install “Internet Explorer 6 (SP1)” have been downloaded to your Local Disk (“C:”), into the folder “C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files”)
B) Move the “Windows Update Setup Files” folder to the ARCHIVES folder | Help |
(The “Internet Explorer 6 (SP1)” Setup program & files are contained in the “Windows Update Setup Files” folder)
(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
click “WINDOWS” File Folder icon;
Select the “Windows Update Setup Files” File Folder icon;
move it to the “ARCHIVE” folder by doing a drag-and-drop into the “ARCHIVE” folder)
C) In addition, download the file “Cert&SignOff.reg” from my website, to the ARCHIVES folder | Help |
(Right click this link: Cert&SignOff.reg, then click “Save Target As…”; save it in the ARCHIVES folder.)
(Merging this file with the registry [clicking on it] will deactivate the Internet Options “Check for publisher's certificate revocation”, “Check for server certificate revocation”, “Check for signatures on downloaded programs”, and “Warn about invalid site certificates”)
A) attempt to Delete the following subfolders in the WINDOWS folder: | Help |
(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
click “WINDOWS” File Folder icon;
Delete each of the following File Folders:)
(in other words: Delete all subfolders except “COMMAND”, “Desktop”, “SYSTEM”, and “SYSTEM32”)
B) attempt to Delete all individual files in the WINDOWS folder | Help |
(Select all of the individual files in the WINDOWS folder; right click, then click “Delete”)
C) Delete the following files in the Local Disk (“C:”) root folder: | Help |
(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
Delete each of the following files:)
D) Delete all “Internet Explorer 6” Program Files | Help |
(Click the “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
click “Program Files” File Folder icon;
click “Internet Explorer” File Folder icon;
Delete all File Folders & files in this folder)
E) Empty the “Recycle Bin” | Help |
(Right click on the “Recycle Bin” desktop icon; click “Empty Recycle Bin”)
F) Restart in “MS-DOS Safe Mode”, and delete the WINDOWS folder | Help |
(Click “Start”, click “Shut Down...”, click “Restart in MS-DOS mode” radio button, click “OK”;
When the Startup Menu appears, select the “MS-DOS in Safe Mode” option;
Type “CD\” and press the “Enter” key
[to get to the root of the local disk C:];
Type “Deltree WINDOWS” and press the “Enter” key, then type “Y”
to delete the entire Windows folder.
This command may take a minute or two to complete)
A) Turn computer off for 30 seconds (to clear memory) |
B) Startup with the “Boot Disk”, in MS-DOS mode, with CD-ROM support | Help |
(Turn computer back on; insert your new “Boot Disk” to startup; select the “Load CD-ROM Disk Driver” option)
C) Install “Windows 98” from the CD | Help |
(Insert your “Windows 98” CD into the CD drive; type “D:\SETUP”, then follow instructions to install)
A) Turn off the Internet Options that require the online verification of the “Internet Explorer” setup program | Help |
(The downloaded file Cert&SignOff.reg turns off these Internet Options:
Merging this file with the Windows Registry allows the downloaded “Internet Explorer 6 (SP1)” to setup, without requiring your computer to be connected to the internet to verify its signatures)
(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
click “ARCHIVE” File Folder icon;
Click the icon “Cert&SignOff.reg”)
B) Move the “Windows Update Setup Files” File Folder from the ARCHIVE folder to the WINDOWS folder | Help |
(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
click “ARCHIVE” File Folder icon;
Select the “Windows Update Setup Files” File Folder;
Move it to the “WINDOWS” folder by doing a drag-and-drop into the “WINDOWS” folder)
C) Install “Internet Explorer 6” | Help |
(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
click “WINDOWS” File Folder icon;
click “Windows Update Setup Files” File Folder icon;
Click the icon “ie6setup.exe” to install)
A) Move the user-customized File Folders from the ARCHIVE folder to the WINDOWS folder: | Help |
(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
click “ARCHIVE” File Folder icon;
Select all files & File Folders by holding the “Ctrl” key while pressing the “A” key;
Move these to the “WINDOWS” folder by doing a drag-and-drop into the “WINDOWS” folder:)
A) Make sure your Modem is installed | Help |
(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;
click “Control Panel” System Folder icon;
click “Modems” icon;
If your modem appears, it’s probably good to go.
If your modem doesn’t appear, click the “Add…” button and follow the instructions to set it up)
B) Check your “Internet Explorer 6” dial-up settings | Help |
