(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
Right click, point to “New”, click “Folder”, and name it “ARCHIVE”)

(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;  click “WINDOWS” File Folder icon;
Copy the following “WINDOWS” subfolders to the “ARCHIVE” folder by holding down the “Ctrl” key while doing a drag-and-drop of each to the “ARCHIVE” folder:)

(Click “Start”, point to “Programs”, point to “Accessories”, point to “System Tools”, and then click “Configure Windows”;
In the “Configure Windows” dialog box, click “Startup Disk”, click “Create Disk...” and follow the instructions)

(To run Windows “Registry Editor”:  click “Start”, click “Run...”, type “regedit” and press the “Enter” key;
Press the “Home” key;
Click on the “+” sign just to the left of “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE”, then underneath it click on the “+” sign just to the left of “Software”, then underneath it the “+” sign just to the left of “Microsoft”, then underneath it the “+” sign just to the left of “Windows”, then underneath it click on “CurrentVersion”;
Click anywhere in the right pane, scroll down to “Product Key”, and save the 25-character code next to it by writing it on a piece of paper.  You will need this when you re-install Windows)

Click the “Download” button 
Save the Setup file which downloads, “ie6setup.exe”, to the folder “C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files”)

Open the “Windows Update Setup Files” folder and run “ie6setup.exe” [click the “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;  click “WINDOWS” File Folder icon;  click the “Windows Update Setup Files” File Folder icon;
Click the “ie6setup.exe” Application icon]:

1. In the “Welcome to Setup ...” dialog box, click the radio button “I accept the agreement”, then click “Next >”
2. In the “Windows Update: Internet Explorer ...” dialog box, click the radio button “Install Minimal, or customize your browser - 1.6MB”, then click “Next >”
3. In the “Component Options” dialog box, choose the following items (click in these checkboxes):
   1. select “Internet Explorer 6 Web Browser”
   2. select “Offline Browsing Pack”
   3. select “Internet Explorer Help”
   4. select “Internet Connection Wizard”
   5. select “Internet Explorer Core Fonts”
   6. select “Internet Explorer Browsing Enhancements”
   7. select “Outlook Express”
   8. UN-select “Windows Media Player”
   9. select “Vector Graphics Rendering (VML)”
   10. select “Visual Basic Scripting Support”
   11. select “Additional Web Fonts”
   12. select “Language Auto-Selection”'
   
   Then, click the “Advanced...” button, click in the box “Download only”, click the “OK” button;
   Then click the “Next >” button
   
   
4. In the “Download Options” dialog box:
   Make sure the textbox labeled “Folder to download installation files:” contains “C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files”; and:
   Under the “Type of system to install on:” label, make sure the radio button “Windows 98” is selected;
   Then click “Next >”.
   The download may take an hour or two with a 56K dial-up modem.

In summary:  the files to install “Internet Explorer 6 (SP1)” have been downloaded to your Local Disk (“C:”), into the folder “C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files”)

(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;  click “WINDOWS” File Folder icon;
Select the “Windows Update Setup Files” File Folder icon; move it to the “ARCHIVE” folder by doing a drag-and-drop into the “ARCHIVE” folder)

(Right click this link: Cert&SignOff.reg, then click “Save Target As…”;  save it in the ARCHIVES folder.)

(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;  click “WINDOWS” File Folder icon;
Delete each of the following File Folders:)

(in other words:  Delete all subfolders except “COMMAND”, “Desktop”, “SYSTEM”, and “SYSTEM32”)

(Select all of the individual files in the WINDOWS folder;  right click, then click “Delete”)

(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;
Delete each of the following files:)

(Click the “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;  click “Program Files” File Folder icon;  click “Internet Explorer” File Folder icon; 
Delete all File Folders & files in this folder)

(Right click on the “Recycle Bin” desktop icon;  click “Empty Recycle Bin”)

(Click “Start”, click “Shut Down...”, click “Restart in MS-DOS mode” radio button, click “OK”;
When the Startup Menu appears, select the “MS-DOS in Safe Mode” option;
Type “CD\” and press the “Enter” key  [to get to the root of the local disk C:];
Type “Deltree WINDOWS” and press the “Enter” key, then type “Y” to delete the entire Windows folder.  This command may take a minute or two to complete)

(Turn computer back on;  insert your new “Boot Disk” to startup;  select the “Load CD-ROM Disk Driver” option)

(Insert your “Windows 98” CD into the CD drive;  type “D:\SETUP”, then follow instructions to install)

(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;  click “ARCHIVE” File Folder icon;
Click the icon “Cert&SignOff.reg”)

(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;  click “ARCHIVE” File Folder icon;
Select the “Windows Update Setup Files” File Folder;
Move it to the “WINDOWS” folder by doing a drag-and-drop into the “WINDOWS” folder)

(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;  click “WINDOWS” File Folder icon; click “Windows Update Setup Files” File Folder icon;
Click the icon “ie6setup.exe” to install)

(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “DISK1_VOL1 (C:)” Local Disk icon;  click “ARCHIVE” File Folder icon;
Select all files & File Folders by holding the “Ctrl” key while pressing the “A” key;
Move these to the “WINDOWS” folder by doing a drag-and-drop into the “WINDOWS” folder:)

(Click “My Computer” System Folder icon;  click “Control Panel” System Folder icon;  click “Modems” icon; 
If your modem appears, it’s probably good to go.
If your modem doesn’t appear, click the “Add…” button and follow the instructions to set it up)

• Run “Internet Explorer”;  on the top Menu Bar, click “Tools”, then click ”Internet Options…”;  click the “Connections” tab. 
• If “My Connection (Default)” is present under the “Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings” label:
  Click it, then click the “Settings…” button;
  Under “Dial-up settings”, make sure your account is correctly entered in the “User Name:” textbox; 
  Click the “Properties” button and make sure the “Phone Number:” settings are correctly filled in.
• If “My Connection (Default)” is not present under the “Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings” label:
  Click the “Add…” button and follow the instructions
